Iyappu Urai

(Syntax Edition of Tamil Classical Poetry)

Prof. Sundaresan considered his invention of Iyappu Urai his proudest achievement. It was a five year project to help readers of ancient Tamil classics to "assimilate more thoroughly what they study." He achieved it by delineating the text in multiple hierarchical levels and grouping them in a picturesque format. With each subsequent level, the reader gets deeper and deeper into the understanding the poem.

He has annotated 50,000 lines of classical Tamil poetry (including Puram Nanoor, Agam Nanoor, Paripaadal, NattriNai etc.) and they are in a state of ready publication.

The concept and the schemes are lucidly explained with illustration in the first two papers below.
